Slovenian Lighting Designer Niko Podlesnik was one of a number of ‘guest’ LDs at the 2014 Radio City Festival in Maribor, which is staged outside the picturesque second city’s Arena Hotel at the foot of the Golden Fox ski slope – although by the end of May, there’s usually no snow around!
Niko was working for popular Slovenian rockers Dan D who have a large following that has been built up through constant touring and live work, and were one of the headliners for the annual one day event which attracts 15,000 music fans.
Lighting for the festival was supplied by rental company Festival Novo Mesto and included 20 x Robe ROBIN Pointes and eight ColorWash 575 XTs as the primary moving lights on the rig, running together with strobes, blinders and PARs, all controlled by an Avolites Titan Mobile.
Niko was delighted to find Pointes were on the rig as he has been avidly using Robe’s super-selling multipurpose fixture at every opportunity.
He has worked with Dan D for two years and Robe LEDWash 600s and ROBIN 600E Spot and Washes are on their touring rider. He has used Robe products in his work for many years since first meeting Slovenian distributor MK Light Sound’s Mice and Dean Karov at Prolight+Sound Frankfurt a few years back,“MK Light Sound are fantastic ambassadors for Robe, and the support they give to individual LDs like myself is very impressive – they are always coming out quickly with new information and product updates and are very proactive with demos and tests,” he affirms.
Since the first meeting and introduction to Robe, Niko has taken a keen interest in the development of the brand and followed it through by including various Robe products on his designs over the last 10 years.
His favourite fixtures of the moment – apart from Pointes - are the ROBIN MMX Spot and ROBIN MMX WashBeams, on which he comments, “You have everything you need for a great show in one neat and tidy fixture – this is what most LDs really want!”
In addition to lighting various high profile bands for the last 10 years, he currently works at Stuk, the biggest student club in Maribor. The city is home to Slovenia’s second largest university and has a lively reputation for music and live performance in part resulting from the student population.
Niko says he will continue to specify and use Robe fixtures whenever possible. “Robe For Ever!” he declares with a large grin!
The production lighting design for Radio City 2014 in Maribor was created by Luka Vodnik from Festival Novo Mesto.
