A hundred and twelve Robe moving lights were used by Set Designer Valentin Lüdicke of Heidelberg based design practice Atelier Kontrast to light Floor 2 of the 2013 Time Warp EDM event at the Maimarkt-Areal Arena, Mannheim, Germany.
This saw 15,000 revellers party hard to some of the best dance music on the planet including Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Dubfire and many more.
Valentin’s imagineering followed the dynamic architecture of the specially designed ‘Tri-Arc’ curved roof structure, constructed from a series of interlocking triangles, which, combined with some clever lighting trickery, created an infinity perspective.
He chose 56 x ROBIN LEDBeam 100s and 56 x ROBIN MMX Spots to be at the hub of the lighting rig, together with a smattering of LED-PARs and a bunch of strobes, working closely on the lighting elements with programmer / operator Matthias “Lumpy” Vollrath.
Matthias is also Richie Hawtin’s LD … and the DJ delighted the crowds playing a marathon 6.5 hour set on this Floor of the event for which Matthias was able to have lots of fun using the Robes!
The MMX Spots were specified due to the “Endless possibilities” afforded by using the dual graphics wheels explains Valentin, while the LEDBeam 100s were picked for their “super-fast speed and movement” which is ideal for hi-energy EDM style lighting. (LEDBeam 100s were also used recently for the Main Stage of the Ultra Festival in Miami for similar reasons).
As you can imagine, keeping a show looking interesting, diverse and different over such a sustained period of time was a real challenge, but with the MMX Spots and LEDBeams at their disposal, Matthias and Valentin easily accomplished this.
The Robe fixtures were chosen carefully, bearing in mind that the event ran non-stop from 9 p.m. through to 2 p.m. the following afternoon, and also with the special requirements needed for electronic music.
This included no breaks in the music for 17 hours, and the freedom to be able to operate ‘live’ on the fly … and go with the rhythm and feel of the music, taking the energy from the DJs onstage and helping spread it out across an enthusiastic audience.
