Johannesburg based Keystone Productions utilized 76 x Robe moving lights on the 2014 South African Business Awards (SABAs), for which Christopher Bolton was Production Director, looking after the set, visuals and lighting design for event producers Outlaw Events.

Leading SA rental company MGG was nominated as the preferred technical supplier  - MGG and Keystone Productions are regular collaborators in this context - and the Robe count included 12 x LEDWash 1200s, 48 x LEDBeam 100s and 16 x Pointes – all from Robe’s ROBIN series.

The gala dinner event, attended by 800 people, also featured live entertainment from SAMA Award winning Lloyd Cele and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

It was the second time that Keystone had used the Pointes, which were positioned on the stage floor. “They never disappoint,” says Christopher, adding that he really appreciates the solidness of the beams, “You feel like reaching up and touching them when they move overhead”.

He placed the Pointes on the floor as the sheer intensity of the beams meant that he could connect the people sitting right at the back of the room with the action onstage, or alternatively, soften the whole look on some of the slower musical pieces using the prism effects. Pointes offer “Some of the best” prism and gobo effects currently on the market he reckons.

The LEDWash 1200s were rigged on the front truss and mainly used for efficient general stage washing.

It’s “THE BEST LED Wash available on the market – its punch is second to none!” he enthused.

It was actually his first time using the 1200s – the largest of Robe’s LEDWash series. He’s used the smaller LEDWash 600 extensively since it was first launched in 2010 signaling the start of his 4 year (so far) self-declared ‘love affair’ with the fixture!

The little LEDBeam 100s flanked both sides of a central V-shaped truss and were used as sharp, piercing beam lights, and as a side wash onto the stage for some of the performances. With them being so high on the set this “Worked a charm” says Christopher, adding that running in Mode 1 with control of the individual LEDs “Always creates awesome colour combinations and FX”.

Robe is one of his favourite lighting brands. With each new product release “You can tell that lots of time and money has been invested in R ‘n’ D,” he observes.

Christopher operated lighting and playback video content – also created in-house by Keystone - for the live acts using his Martin M6 console.

Keystone Productions is a lighting, video and show design practice independently owned by Christopher and his three partners Justin and Jon Le Roux and Warren Liss. They are have their own lighting and visual control equipment and collaborate regularly with Johannesburg based MGG as a preferred supplier for a production’s required lighting and video hardware.

The SA Premier Business Awards is hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry, Proudly South African and Brand SA. The awards recognize business excellence and honour enterprises that promote the spirit of success and innovation.
